CS Institute

Join the CS Institute, a free, online professional learning opportunity designed to introduce K-8 educators, or anyone that works with youth, to computer science pedagogy and equitable teaching strategies that can be incorporated into any subject area. The CS Institute is a self-paced, online companion to the Creating Equitable Computer Sciences workshop created by and for the Charlottesville CS Community Research-Practice Partnership. You will leave the CS Institute with at least one CS-infused lesson customized to use in your classroom!
The goals of the CS Institute are to:
  • Demystify computer science;
  • Build a regional computer science education community;
  • Increase access to CS for all students
Go to the CS Institute

What have previous attendees said about it?
  • I like the many different types/examples of projects, activities, lessons, etc.
  • I liked that with the virtual Institute, I was able to work at my own pace. I was able to re-watch videos and go back through slide shows if needed.
  • Thank you so much for this opportunity. I really enjoyed it.
  • I felt like the CS Institute was the clearest example of effective instructional strategies that I've seen.

Who should join?
The CS Institute is open to anyone who wants to learn more about computer science and how to bring it into their K-8 spaces of teaching and learning - whether formal or informal.

What can you expect?
You will explore CS pedagogy and equitable teaching strategies through a series of 4 Modules with guided Learn, Do, Connect, and Reflect activities.
You will leave the CS Institute with at least one CS-infused lesson customized to use in your classroom! You can also earn PD credit from the University of Virginia.

CS Institute Organizers

The first CS Institute was launched by Kim Wilkens, Tech-Girls founder and current Ed.D. student at UVA, and Zach Minster, 9-12 CS Coordinator at St. Anne's-Belfield School, in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Chiu, Associate Professor at UVA's School of Education the summer of 2017 as a 2-day PD experience for St. Anne's-Belfield School educators. Because of the philosophy within the CS department at the school to share what they were learning about CS education through outreach, they opened up the experience to the community. Dr. Luther Tychoneviech, Assistant Professor in the CS Department at UVA, joined the CS Institute in 2019. The 2020 iteration of the CS Institute went online as a multi-week experience and is now the foundation of professional learning for the CCSC RPP.
