FAQ

Where is the CS Institute?
The CS Institute is an online companion to the Creating Equitable Computer Sciences workshop created by and for the Charlottesville CS Community Research-Practice Partnership:
  • You can do the activities at your own pace, asynchronously or you can join us virtually during the week to explore the activities with other K-8 educators and CS education experts.
  • If you live in Charlottesville, you can join us in person.

Who should join?
The CS Institute is open to anyone who wants to learn more about computer science and how to bring it into their K-8 spaces of teaching and learning - whether formal or informal.

What have previous attendees said about it?
  • I like the many different types/examples of projects, activities, lessons, etc.
  • I liked that with the virtual Institute, I was able to work at my own pace. I was able to re-watch videos and go back through slide shows if needed.
  • Thank you so much for this opportunity. I really enjoyed it.
  • I felt like the CS Institute was the clearest example of effective instructional strategies that I've seen.

What can you expect?
You will explore CS pedagogy and equitable teaching strategies through a series of guided Learn, Do, and Reflect activities during the week.
There will be opportunities to join hands-on workshop sessions during the week and get connected with veteran CS educators for office hours over Zoom. You will leave the CS Institute with at least one CS-infused lesson customized to use in your classroom! You can also earn PD credit from the University of Virginia.

What is the schedule

Starting July 25, we will start sharing the Learn, Do, and Reflect activities each day during the week. If you want to join for some synchronous hands-on activities or office hours, we are currently working out that schedule. Expect to hear from us by July 8 with those details.

Once shared, the CS Institute 2022 resources will remain available for at least one year.

Is there a code of conduct?
Yes. We are dedicated to providing a respectful, harassment-free community for everyone. We will not tolerate harassment or bullying of any participant in any form. We expect participants to abide by the Anti-Harassment Policy identified in the Charlottesville Meetup/Group Code of Conduct.

Will I receive a PD certificate?
Yes, you can receive PD credit from the University of Virginia School of Education if you complete the pre- and post-surveys and share your CS-infused lessons by August 31, 2022. You can also choose to be part of the ongoing CS Cohort and receive  additional Educational Project points for re-licensure from UVA.

What if my plans change?
Please do let us know if your plans change and you are no longer able to attend the CS Institute.
