2019 Schedule

Day 1: Learn-a-thon
The first day of the CS Institute will be an introduction to all things computer science! You’ll learn first-hand from students what they find so compelling and meaningful about computer science and how it is impacting their future. You will then have the opportunity to participate in 3 workshops during the day featuring a wide variety of CS skills and tools.
  • 9:00-10:45am - Student panel & student-led CS activities
  • 11:00-noon - Workshop 1
    • Making CS Education Open
    • Computer Science is an Open Book
    • Scratch That Itch: Where math & art collide
    • Design Thinking Meets Robotics
    • Weather Station Arduino Project
  • 12:15-1:15 - Lunch
  • 1:30-2:30 - Workshop 2
    • The Art of Brainstorming
    • Computational thinking & coding activities for K-2
    • Music and Coding
    • Intro to Arduino
    • Computer Science Principles Ethos
  • 2:45-3:45 - Workshop 3
    • Robot Petting Zoo
    • Explore Code.org
    • Physical Computing for Kids
    • Intro to Turing Tumble: Marble-Powered Mechanical Computers
    • Intro to Data Science
  • 4:00-4:30 - Reflection

Day 2 - Design-a-thon
Whether you are integrating CS into an existing lesson plan, creating a new lesson or remixing someone else’s lesson, you will find support and guidance from mentors who have been there and done that. In the morning, we'll explore strategies for teaching computer science in ways that reach all students. In the afternoon, we will split into elementary, middle and high school cohorts to work together to design CS-infused lessons
  • 9:00-11:15 - A cognitive approach to an inclusive classroom
A survey of topics from the Tapestry workshop series from UVA for helping teachers teach more and more diverse students. Topics include basic cognitive load theory; stereotype threat and how to mitigate its influence on your students; implicit bias and how to combat it in yourself; and various concrete suggestions for revising curricula, improving pedagogy, and generally making your class one where a wide variety of students feel welcome and able to learn.
  • 11:15-noon - Cohort introductions
  • Noon-1:00 - Lunch
  • 1:00-3:00 - Cohort working groups design & share CS-infused lessons
  • 3:15-4:30 - Share out & Certificates of completion!
