Why Attend the CS Institute?
Computer science (CS) is part of all of our lives. In today’s tech-driven world, a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of computing can empower students to take control of how technologies will affect their lives, their culture, and their future. Students need opportunities to learn CS to enable them to become creators, not just consumers, of the next wave of discoveries, solutions, and innovations. Yet, there is underrepresentation of women and racial minority groups in CS education, and this underrepresentation is increasing, rather than becoming more equitable. Learning computer science involves problem solving, logical reasoning, and design skills that can be meaningfully integrated in every discipline.
Kim Wilkens and Zach Minster, coordinators & instructors of the CS Program at St. Anne's-Belfield School are on the leading edge of integrating CS into the K-12 space. They are excited to be collaborating with UVA Curry School of Education to bring back the CS Institute July 22-23, 2019! The purpose of the CS Institute is to help K-12 educators from all disciplines learn about computer science and find ways to incorporate it into their teaching. Along the way, we will:
Teachers report that integrating computer science into project-based learning:
Students report that creating tech through computer science offers them:
The CS Institute will provide you with an opportunity to learn and get hands on with new computer science skills and tools. You will come away with a lesson plan infused with CS to try out in your classroom as well as a community of educators who can provide support and guidance for your journey into computer science integration. Often PD tends to be about getting hands-on with new tools or getting excited about new concepts, but it leaves the participants on their own to figure out how they incorporate this new learning into their practice. That's why we devote time and resources to mentoring and supporting you as you work toward integrating CS into your teaching in a meaningful way before you leave.

- Demystify computer science;
- Build a regional computer science education community;
- Increase access to CS for all students
Teachers report that integrating computer science into project-based learning:
- offers a new way to assess their students’ knowledge
- encourages students to problem solve and collaborate on solutions
- empowers their students to share their learning with others
Students report that creating tech through computer science offers them:
- a creative outlet for sharing their knowledge
- the opportunity to overcome stereotypes that they had about coding and computer science
- a learning challenge that is fun, engaging and relevant to their life experiences.
